1996 New ReleaseThe 1996 CHOICES Women’s Charity Golf Tournament has expanded. The tournament now has a home page on the World Wide Web.
“Anyone anywhere in the world with access to the Internet can view the tournament’s home page,” said Dr. Sid Cheah of Patriot Healthcare Development, the company which donated the home page. “The page is now listed on golf.com, a well known Internet golf site partially owned by NBC, and on America’s Sports Headquarters' site.” Along with web pages for the Memorial Tournament, it is only one of a handful of golf web pages for tournaments in Ohio.
The CHOICES tournament page can be viewed with any Web browser. “Just point your URL to http://users1.ee.net/phdinc/golftour.htm,” said Dr. Cheah. America’s Sports Headquarters is at http://www.sport-hq.com/sport; and golf.com is at http://www.golf.com.
“The CHOICES charity tournament has already benefited from its Web site,” said tournament steering committee member Poh Willson of Patriot Healthcare Development. “After seeing our Web page, Wingo Sports Group in Chicago e-mailed me a couple of weeks ago, and donated a putter for the silent auction.”
The silent auction and raffle, presented during the tournament by Worthington Community Women, raised nearly $2,000 for CHOICES last year. Other items up for bid this year include golf sportswear, a Daiwa golf bag donated by Daiwa/Southshore of Westerville, and a ride in the Sunny95-Kroger Jetcopter, Yellow Thunder–to mention only a few.
Reflecting on the event’s history and rise to becoming a major fund raising event for CHOICES, Willson said: “When the Columbus Business Women’s Golf League approached CHOICES in 1993 regarding the golf tournament, we only dreamt the tournament would be well received. As it turned out, proceeds have doubled in only three years. This year we hope to make $20,000 to benefit CHOICES.”
Other changes are afoot this year. The tournament has been renamed The CHOICES Women’s Charity Golf Tournament. This year’s new title sponsor is American Speedy Printing, Downtown Location.
Also new this year is a 9 hole tournament presented by the Clifford Mortgage Company. The major event will remain the 18-hole four-woman scramble. However, this year the scramble will be flighted. Last year’s first prize winners received sixteen free rounds of golf at the Medallion Club.
Krieger Ford, and Women Physicians in OB/GYN will sponsor a Hole-In-One competition. The prize: a 2-year lease on a ’96 Mustang convertible donated by Krieger Ford.
“While our tournament is only three years old, we have received tremendous support from Ohio businesses, particularly local companies, and we are very grateful,” said another founding steering committee member, Melody Borchers of the Women’s Business Resource Program at the Ohio Department of Development. “Two hundred business and professional women are expected to play this year.”
Other major sponsors for 1996 are Bricker & Eckler, The Kroger Food & Drug Co., The Limited, Inc., Star Bank, and Wendy’s International.
CHOICES’ Development Director Kathy Meyers said that the dollars earned will be used to continue programming that includes a 24-hour crisis line, temporary shelter for abused women and their children, outclient counseling, legal advocacy, community outreach, professional education, and peer support groups for those affected by domestic violence.
The 3rd Annual CHOICES Women’s Charity Golf Tournament will be held on May 20th, 1996 at the Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio. Companies interested in making contributions and women interested in golfing may contact either Willson at 614/891-3444 or Meyers at 614/258-6080. Player costs are $95 per person for the 18 hole division, and $65 per person for the 9 hole division.
